With stunning views of the French Alps and a course that challenges even seasoned athletes, the Maxi Race has become a bucket-list event in the trail running community.

History and Significance of the Event

Originally launched as a local race, the Maxi Race has grown in scale and reputation over the years. It now offers multiple race distances, accommodating everyone from beginners to ultra-endurance athletes. Each year, the event celebrates a spirit of adventure and resilience, as runners push through rugged terrain, high-altitude climbs, and the natural beauty surrounding Annecy. For those who complete it, the Maxi Race is more than a finish line—it’s an unforgettable journey.

A Global Gathering of Trail Runners

The Maxi Race fosters a strong sense of community, bringing together trail runners of all levels to share in the thrill and camaraderie of mountain running. With its blend of natural beauty and demanding courses, the race embodies the core values of the trail running world, creating lasting memories and friendships along the way.

Distances and Race Categories in the Maxi Race

The Maxi Race offers a variety of race categories, making it accessible to both beginners and ultra-endurance runners. Each category is crafted to showcase the best of Annecy’s stunning landscapes while providing unique challenges.

Race Options and Their Challenges

  • Marathon-Race (42 km): This full marathon distance brings over 2,800 meters of elevation gain, offering a challenging yet scenic route. Runners navigate technical trails with steep climbs and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Annecy, providing a fulfilling race experience for marathoners stepping into mountain running.
  • Maxi Ultra-Race (83 km): Reserved for seasoned ultra-runners, this 83 km course demands endurance, mental strength, and precise pacing. With over 5,200 meters of elevation, runners tackle mountain ridges, exposed paths, and high-altitude sections that make the course one of the most challenging ultra-races in Europe.
  • XL-Race (115 km): Split into two stages across two days, the XL-Race offers 115 kilometers of mountain trails and steep climbs. This format allows runners to recover overnight, making it an ideal choice for those seeking an ultra experience with added rest.
  • Other Categories: Shorter options, including the 16 km Lake-Race and relay formats, are available for those looking for a taste of the Maxi Race without committing to ultra distances. These races showcase the alpine scenery and are perfect for runners new to mountain races.

Choosing the Right Race

When selecting a category, it’s essential to consider your fitness level, endurance experience, and comfort with mountain trails. Trailrunadvisor recommends that new runners start with the Lake-Race or Marathon-Race to familiarize themselves with the terrain. Runners with a solid endurance base and previous ultra experience might aim for the Maxi Ultra or XL-Race for a memorable challenge.

Course and Elevation: The Challenges of the Maxi Race

The Maxi Race is known for its physically demanding courses, marked by steep ascents, technical trails, and breathtaking views. Each race category offers its own set of elevation profiles, with landscapes that include alpine meadows, rocky trails, and forested paths around Lake Annecy.

Elevation Profiles by Race Category

  • Lake-Race and Marathon-Race: These shorter distances introduce runners to challenging climbs and descents, with elevations reaching 800 meters for the Lake-Race and over 2,800 meters for the Marathon. The course is well-supported and marked, providing a safe yet challenging experience for runners.
  • Maxi Ultra-Race (83 km): The Maxi Ultra features 5,200 meters of elevation gain, traversing high-altitude trails and exposed paths. Runners face technical sections that test agility and endurance, with mountain ridges offering stunning but daunting views.
  • XL-Race (115 km): Split across two days, the XL-Race brings a combined elevation gain of 5,600 meters. This format allows runners to rest overnight but still requires stamina and skill to tackle steep climbs and technical descents over two challenging stages.

Trailrunadvisor’s Tips for Tackling Elevation

To handle these intense courses, smart pacing and efficient climbing are essential. Training on similar elevation profiles can improve endurance and balance, while agility training on trails will prepare you for technical sections. Being ready for sudden weather shifts is also crucial, as the alpine environment around Annecy is known for its unpredictability.

Essential Preparation Tips for the Maxi Race

Preparing for the Maxi Race requires more than just endurance training. To successfully tackle this mountainous challenge, runners need to focus on strength, adaptability, and strategies for managing the alpine conditions. Here’s how to get ready:

Training for Elevation and Technical Trails

Incorporating hill repeats and long trail runs into your routine is essential. Train on steep ascents and descents to build leg strength and practice control on downhill sections. If possible, train at a similar altitude to help with acclimatization, as this will improve stamina and endurance on race day.

Gear and Clothing for Changing Conditions

Weather in the Annecy region can change rapidly, so dressing in layers is key. Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking base layers and pack a windproof jacket to stay comfortable. Reliable trail shoes with strong grip are vital for stability on rocky paths, while trail poles can provide added support, especially in the ultra categories.

Nutrition and Hydration Strategy

Aid stations are available, but carrying your own fuel and hydration for the marathon and ultra distances is wise. Energy gels, dried fruits, and electrolyte tablets are ideal for sustained energy. Use a hydration pack with a capacity of 1-2 liters for longer races, as hydration is crucial, particularly in warm weather.

Trailrunadvisor’s Pro Tip

Create a race-day strategy, breaking the course into sections based on elevation or landmarks. Set mini-goals to keep up your morale and focus. Adjust your pace according to the terrain, ensuring you conserve energy for tougher sections. Consistent hydration and nutrition are essential to avoid fatigue during long hours on the trail.

Registration and Requirements to Participate

The Maxi Race is a highly anticipated event, with spots filling up quickly each year. To secure your place, it’s important to understand the registration process, entry fees, and any special requirements for each category.

Registration Process and Lottery System

Registration opens several months in advance, usually in the winter, to allow runners time to prepare. Due to the popularity of the event, certain categories may operate on a lottery system. Runners aiming for the ultra distances should register early or be prepared for the lottery to ensure a spot in the race.

Entry Fees and What’s Included

Each race category has its own entry fee, typically covering race materials, access to aid stations, timing services, and finisher medals. Ultra-distance participants often receive additional gear or race merchandise. For updated details on fees and inclusions, visit the official Maxi Race website.

Participation Requirements

  • Medical Certificate: French law requires all race participants to provide a medical certificate, signed by a licensed doctor, verifying they are fit to participate in a high-intensity event. Be sure to have this document ready in advance, as registration is incomplete without it.
  • Experience Recommendations: For challenging categories like the Maxi Ultra or XL-Race, it’s recommended to have prior experience with mountain or trail ultramarathons. Although not mandatory, this background helps ensure safety and preparedness.

Qualifying Points and UTMB Consideration

The Maxi Race is a qualifying race for events like the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc), with specific categories offering points toward UTMB entry. Check the official website for details on points awarded for each race.

Trailrunadvisor’s Registration Advice

Register as soon as possible to avoid missing out, especially for competitive distances. If you’re traveling internationally, double-check passport and visa requirements to streamline travel arrangements and ensure a smooth arrival in Annecy.

Travel and Accommodation Tips for Annecy

Annecy, known for its stunning lake and alpine scenery, serves as the perfect base for the Maxi Race. Planning your accommodations and transportation in advance is essential, as the event draws a large number of participants and visitors each year.

Accommodation Options in Annecy

Annecy offers a wide range of accommodations to suit various budgets, from hostels and guesthouses to hotels and vacation rentals. Staying close to the starting points is ideal, as it minimizes travel time on race day. Booking early is highly recommended due to the high demand.

  • Hotels and Lodges: Many hotels in Annecy’s center offer easy access to race starting points and local amenities.
  • Vacation Rentals: Renting a chalet or apartment is a comfortable choice, especially for groups or families. Many rentals include kitchen facilities, allowing runners to prepare pre-race meals.

Transportation and Accessibility

Annecy is accessible via Geneva International Airport, located about 40 km away. Shuttle services and buses provide direct connections from the airport to Annecy. If you’re traveling by train, the SNCF offers routes from major French cities to Annecy’s central station. On race day, consider using public transport or walking to avoid parking congestion.

Gear Storage and Support Services

The Maxi Race typically provides secure bag storage for participants, allowing you to leave personal items while you run. Additionally, Annecy has several sports shops that offer last-minute gear rentals or purchases, including trekking poles, hydration packs, and energy snacks.

Logistics Tips from Trailrunadvisor

If you’re traveling with friends or family, arrange a meeting point after the race to avoid post-race crowds. Also, check weather forecasts a few days before the event to make last-minute adjustments to your gear or clothing. A well-organized logistical plan allows you to fully focus on the race.

Trailrunadvisor’s Tips for a Successful Maxi Race Experience

The Maxi Race offers both the thrill of trail running and the challenges of a mountainous course. These tips from Trailrunadvisor can help you make the most of your experience.

Pace Yourself According to the Terrain

With steep climbs and technical descents, the Maxi Race demands smart pacing. Begin conservatively, saving energy for the tougher sections later in the race. Adjust your speed based on elevation to avoid burnout and maintain endurance throughout.

Stay Focused and Appreciate the Scenery

While it’s natural to concentrate on performance, take moments to enjoy the stunning alpine views around Lake Annecy. The beauty of the scenery can help keep your spirits up, especially during challenging parts of the course. This mindfulness can also provide much-needed mental breaks.

Maintain Steady Energy with Smart Nutrition

A balanced nutrition plan can make a huge difference in high-altitude and long-distance races. Small, consistent portions of carbohydrates—such as energy gels, bars, or fruit—help keep your energy steady. Ensure you hydrate regularly and adjust intake according to weather conditions to prevent dehydration or muscle cramps.

Use Trail Poles Strategically

Trail poles can be invaluable on steep climbs, particularly in the 83 km Maxi Ultra and the 115 km XL-Race. They provide support and help conserve leg strength on uphill sections. If you plan to use poles, practice with them during training runs to ensure you’re comfortable.

Prepare for Weather Variability

The alpine environment around Annecy is known for sudden weather changes. Start the race in moisture-wicking base layers, carry a lightweight windproof jacket, and bring a weather-resistant pack to be prepared for unexpected shifts in temperature or rain.

Trailrunadvisor’s Strategy for Race Day

Break down the race into manageable sections. Set mini-goals based on landmarks or aid stations to help you stay focused and positive. This approach allows you to maintain momentum, especially during challenging final stretches, while conserving energy for the finish line.

Summary of Results and Experiences from Previous Runners

The Maxi Race is well-known for leaving a profound impact on its participants, with many describing it as a race that combines both mental and physical challenges with breathtaking scenery. Whether tackling the marathon or ultra distances, runners often find it to be one of the most demanding and rewarding experiences in their trail-running journeys.

Average Finish Times and Course Challenges

Finish times vary widely based on experience level and race category, as well as the weather and terrain conditions on race day. For the 42 km Marathon-Race, finish times generally range from 5 to 8 hours, while the 83 km Maxi Ultra often takes seasoned runners between 12 to 18 hours. For the 115 km XL-Race, it’s common to see finish times extend beyond 24 hours, given the added demands of completing the course in two days.

Inspiring Feedback from Past Participants

Many runners highlight the natural beauty and panoramic views around Lake Annecy as key motivators throughout the race. Participants also emphasize the sense of camaraderie among runners, as moments of encouragement and shared challenges create lasting bonds. Completing the Maxi Race is often seen as a badge of honor, with finishers feeling a strong sense of accomplishment for navigating the tough alpine terrain.

Trailrunadvisor’s Final Takeaway

For those who finish the Maxi Race, the experience is more than just a physical feat—it’s a personal achievement and a memorable adventure in one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Europe.
