I left with something much more meaningful: a deeper appreciation of rural Japan, its people, and a race that is built around far more than simply reaching the finish line.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the event, I had the opportunity to speak with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trailrunadvisor.com\/races\/deep-japan-ultra-100\/\"><b>Deep Japan Ultra<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> founder Matsunaga-san, and many of the experiences I had during the race suddenly made sense. His philosophy perfectly explained why this event feels so different from many trail races around the world.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-abca66b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"abca66b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">My Deep Japan Ultra Experience\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-120675b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"120675b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 80K course covers approximately 80 kilometres with 4,000 m+ through the mountains surrounding Uonuma.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My race itself was far from perfect.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I got lost twice. My stomach completely fell apart. I injured my calf during the night. For long stretches I found myself completely alone in the mountains, surrounded by darkness, rain and thick mist.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 14 hours and 18 minutes, I crossed the finish line in 13th place overall. Almost nothing went according to plan.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, I finished more satisfied than after almost any other race I have ever run.<\/span><\/p><p><br \/><br \/><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed0a011 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ed0a011\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">More Than Just a Trail Race\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c99f967 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c99f967\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes Deep Japan Ultra special begins long before the starting line.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaching Uonuma means leaving behind Japan&#8217;s famous cities and travelling deep into the countryside. After taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa, runners continue on a small local train through rice fields, traditional villages and quiet farming communities that very few international visitors ever experience.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the race weekend, I discovered family-run restaurants, neighbourhood bakeries, traditional accommodation and relaxing rural onsens. Everywhere we went, local people seemed genuinely happy that runners had travelled so far to discover their region.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The race became much more than a sporting event.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It became a way of experiencing a side of Japan that most tourists never see.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-791ce96 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"791ce96\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Deep Japan Ultra Feels Different\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f6ded13 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f6ded13\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late in the race, I found myself completely alone.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was dark.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was raining.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visibility had disappeared into dense mist.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My stomach had given up.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My calf was injured.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For nearly four hours, I barely saw another runner.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, everything else faded away.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was no finishing time to chase. No position to defend. Only one simple decision: keep moving or stop.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That moment reminded me exactly why I had signed up for my first ultra marathon.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back after my conversation with Matsunaga-san, I realised that perhaps this was precisely what Deep Japan Ultra had been designed to create.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not simply a difficult race. A meaningful experience.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e13ce67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e13ce67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Final Thoughts\n\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54070be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" 400;\">Trail running has always been my favourite way to discover new places, and Deep Japan Ultra may be one of the finest examples of that.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without the race, I would probably never have visited Uonuma, travelled through rural Niigata, explored its villages, eaten in local restaurants or met the people who call this region home.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the race also gave me something much more personal.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the start, I promised myself that no matter what happened, I would keep moving until I reached the finish.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything went wrong.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I kept moving.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After speaking with the organisation, I realised that this wasn&#8217;t separate from the Deep Japan Ultra experience at all. \u00a0 It was the experience.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A journey into one of Japan&#8217;s most remote regions. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A journey through beautiful mountains.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, if you&#8217;re willing to go far enough, perhaps a journey a little deeper into yourself as well.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But one question stayed with me.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Why did this race feel so different from every other ultra I&#8217;d run?<\/b><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the race, I sat down with founder Matsunaga-san to understand the
