UTMB Kenting 27K – Race Review
The UTMB Kenting 27K is a fast yet technical trail race set in the tropical south of Taiwan, offering a unique mix of runnable terrain and challenging natural features 🌴🏃♂️ Part of the UTMB World Series, the race attracts a strong international field and delivers a competitive, high-energy atmosphere from start to finish.
The course covers approximately 27km, combining flat, fast sections with rolling climbs and technical terrain. Early parts of the race allow for consistent pacing, but the course quickly introduces more varied surfaces, requiring runners to adapt their rhythm and effort.
One of the defining features of the course is a long stretch through dry riverbeds filled with rocks and boulders. This section significantly slows momentum and demands careful foot placement and focus, adding a technical edge to what is otherwise a relatively fast course 🪨
Heat and humidity are also major factors. Even early in the morning, conditions can be demanding, making hydration, pacing, and energy management critical throughout the race. The exposed sections amplify the challenge, especially as fatigue builds.
From an organizational standpoint, the race is professionally run, with clear markings, well-managed aid stations, and strict mandatory gear requirements in line with UTMB standards.
Personally, I finished in 2:19, placing 10th overall out of more than 1,000 runners. I was really happy with the result, especially for my first UTMB World Series race. The execution was strong overall, with only the technical riverbed sections costing some time.
Overall, the UTMB Kenting 27K is a well-balanced race that combines speed, technical running, and challenging conditions. It’s a great option for runners looking to experience a UTMB event in a dynamic and competitive environment 🌴🔥

Hatsune 30K Cup – Race Review
The Hatsune 30K Cup is a well-established and quietly respected trail race set in the mountains of Okutama, just outside Tokyo 🏔️ Known for its simplicity and old-school feel, the race strips things back to the essentials, offering a raw and honest trail running experience.
The course covers roughly 30km with around 2,000m of elevation gain, featuring steep climbs, narrow single-track trails, and flowing descents. Despite the relatively moderate distance on paper, the terrain makes it a physically demanding race that requires strong climbing ability and efficient movement across technical sections.
One of the defining features of the Hatsune 30K is the complete absence of aid stations. Runners are fully responsible for their own nutrition and hydration from start to finish, which adds an extra layer of strategy and self-sufficiency 🥤 The mandatory gear list is minimal, reinforcing the race’s stripped-back approach.
The course itself includes long sections of tight, single-file trail, which can create significant bottlenecks, particularly early in the race. Overtaking opportunities are limited, and starting position plays a major role in how the race unfolds. For many runners, patience becomes just as important as pacing.
Conditions are typically warm and exposed, especially later in the race, requiring careful management of effort and hydration as fatigue builds.
Personally, this race was a bit different. Starting in the final wave meant dealing with heavy congestion early on, including long periods of complete standstill due to bottlenecks. I adjusted expectations, focused on moving well when possible, and worked my way steadily through the field. Despite a disrupted race flow and a less-than-ideal lead-up due to illness, I was happy with the effort and how I finished strong over the final kilometres.
Overall, the Hatsune 30K Cup is a unique and demanding race that rewards patience, self-management, and resilience. It’s a great option for runners looking for a more traditional, no-frills trail race experience in Japan 🏔️🔥

Nikko Mountain Race 35K – Race Review
The Nikko Mountain Race 35K is a challenging mid-distance trail race set in one of Japan’s most scenic and culturally rich regions 🍁🏔️ Held during peak autumn, the course combines rugged mountain terrain with iconic temple surroundings, delivering a race experience that is as visually striking as it is physically demanding.
The course covers roughly 35km with around 2,300m of elevation gain, featuring a mix of sustained climbs, technical descents, and exposed ridgelines. After a short opening section through the temple grounds, the climbing begins quickly and doesn’t let up, forcing runners to settle into a steady rhythm early.
Conditions can be a major factor in Nikko. As the course gains elevation, temperatures drop significantly, with wind and rain often hitting the ridgelines. This creates a sharp contrast between the lower, more sheltered sections and the colder, more exposed upper parts of the course 🌬️
The terrain itself is varied and demanding. Steep climbs test endurance and pacing, while technical descents require focus and control, especially as fatigue builds later in the race. Footing can be unpredictable in sections, adding to the overall challenge and reinforcing the need for strong trail technique.
Personally, I finished in 4:47, placing 18th overall. I was happy with the result, especially given a couple of falls late in the race and a brief off-course section that cost some time. Despite that, it was a valuable experience and a solid performance in my first official trail race in Japan.
Overall, the Nikko Mountain Race 35K is a well-organized and demanding event that blends technical trail running with incredible scenery. It’s a great option for runners looking to experience mountain racing in Japan while testing themselves on a course that requires both physical strength and mental resilience 🍁🔥
