This was first backyard ultra format, and my first time running through the night on no sleep. I really wasn’t sure what I had let myself into, I have to say I should not have worried. The lap format so you can just focus on the current lap and getting back to base camp in time to refuel and go again, it really didn’t feel like a 50 miler at all! Each lap consisted of two loops, which was great as you not only got the base camp vibe more often, but you could hear the music on course and there were plenty of spectators cheering you on. The route was relatively flat, which again for this type of event was perfect.
Base camp was just the best experience ever. Music pumping with the DJ’s timing each lap start off perfectly. Having all the “Martians” supporting you and cheering you on by name, really did make you feel part of something very very special. Every time you crossed through whether it was mid lap or at the end of the lap you really felt like you had just come in a winner with the support that was there.
Thank you Night Shift Ultra for the best adventure yet, here’s hoping you’ll accept me in 2027 😉.

Fantastic event!
Each yard is 2 loops, which does break it up nicely, going through the HQ midway through each yard is a great boost as there are people cheering and music playing. They got a lot of really nice details right: the alien theme, the design of the medals, the free stickers, the merch, even the race number was really well designed and thought put into it. Basecamp being in the woods was fantastic as it was nice and cool. The course was varied and segmented really well. The volunteers were excellent, very encouraging on the megaphone as you go through, making you feel a million bucks. The vibe with the runners was also great with chatting and encouragement from fellow nutcases. Hopefully they can have more toilets next year!
