This was a really beautiful race, with a course surrounded by breathtaking scenery that alone made the effort worthwhile. The organization was also excellent: the shuttle service to the start was very convenient, and the post-race lunch was a great bonus. Having showers available at the finish was another detail that was much appreciated after spending so many hours on the trails.
If I had to suggest a few improvements, I would start with the race start time. In my opinion, it was too late. The heat became a real factor, and bad weather rolled in during the afternoon. In the mountains, conditions are usually much better in the morning, so an earlier start would allow runners to enjoy cooler temperatures and reduce the chances of running into afternoon storms.
Another issue was the long stretch between Rifugio Fauniera and Bivacco Bernardi without any water. With the temperatures we had, that section was tough for everyone. Starting earlier would also have helped reduce the impact of the heat.
Finally, I think the aid station at Bivacco Bernardi should be better stocked. It was missing Coca-Cola, electrolytes, and food, even though it’s probably the aid station where runners need them the most. Personally, I would prioritize this aid station over the last one.
Overall, though, this is a race I would definitely recommend. The course is stunning, the organization is solid, and it’s an experience well worth having.
In summary:
👍 Pros
* Breathtaking scenery.
* Excellent organization, with a shuttle service to the start and a post-race lunch.
* Showers available at the finish.
👎 Cons / Room for improvement
* Start time was too late, leading to hotter conditions and a higher chance of afternoon bad weather.
* The section between Rifugio Fauniera and Bivacco Bernardi is too long without water.
* The aid station at Bivacco Bernardi should be better stocked with Coca-Cola, electrolytes, and food, as it’s the point where runners need them the most.
