UTMB 2025 – Bibs and forecast
UTMB 2025 bibs are more than just race numbers—they’re your passport to one of the most epic ultramarathon experiences on Earth. As someone who was lucky enough to toe the line last year, I know firsthand the joy, nerves, and sheer planning it takes to get to Chamonix with a bib on your chest. In this article, I’ll guide you through how to get your hands on one, what it means this year with such a diverse field, and how the whole system works.
An unprecedented global gathering
As I stood in the crowd last year, surrounded by runners speaking every language you can imagine, I realized just how global the UTMB has become. For the 2025 edition, organizers confirmed that over 121 nationalities will be represented at the starting line. That’s mind-blowing.
Even though Europe still makes up the core (with 79% of bibs going to European runners), the presence of athletes from Asia, North America, South America, and Africa has never been more prominent. It really does feel like the Olympics of trail running. And that only makes UTMB 2025 bibs even more prized.
UTMB 2025 bibs: Understanding the different types
There are several routes to securing a UTMB 2025 bib, and I’ll break each one down with tips based on what worked for me—and what I learned the hard way.
1. Lottery Entry (The Standard Way)
Most runners will try to get in through the official UTMB lottery, which is held annually after registration closes. However, you must qualify first by meeting two criteria:
UTMB Index: A performance score based on recent race results (in the same race category you want to run: 20K, 50K, 100K, or 100M).
Running Stones: Each official UTMB World Series race you complete gives you between 1 and 4 Stones. These are lottery tickets—more Stones = better odds.
2. Charity Bibs (Guaranteed Access)
If you want to skip the lottery, you can go the charity bib route. For a minimum donation (usually around €2,000), you support one of UTMB’s partner NGOs and get immediate access to the race of your choice.
This was my backup plan last year. While I ended up winning the lottery, I knew a couple of runners who went the charity route and said it was worth every euro—not just for the access, but because they felt part of something bigger.
3. Elite UTMB 2025 Bibs (For Top Athletes)
To qualify for an elite bib, you must meet the following UTMB Index thresholds:
100M: Men ≥ 800 / Women ≥ 645
100K: Men ≥ 770 / Women ≥ 615
50K: Men ≥ 720 / Women ≥ 570
20K: Men ≥ 670 / Women ≥ 530
Additionally, you must apply before the elite deadline, which in 2025 is April 15th. Elite bibs come with early start access, media attention, and sometimes even accommodation and travel stipends for top-ranked runners.
4. Partner Bibs (Via Brands and Race Sponsors)
Finally, there are brand-sponsored bibs, sometimes available through UTMB partners like HOKA, Garmin, or nutrition companies. You’ll find giveaways, contests, or loyalty programs throughout the year—follow their social media channels and subscribe to newsletters to stay in the loop.

My 2024 race day experience (and what to expect in 2025)
The moment I received my bib, everything became real. I picked it up on a sunny Tuesday at the Place du Triangle de l’Amitié in Chamonix. The process was smooth, with clear signage, enthusiastic volunteers, and photo ID verification.
I received:
The bib itself (with my name and timing chip)
My GPS tracker
Access wristband for the race area
Swag bag (buff, stickers, partner goodies)
Runners for UTMB 2025 will go through a very similar experience—just make sure you bring ID, medical certificate (if required), and proof of gear compliance.
2025 Forecast: Record-setting diversity
Looking ahead to UTMB 2025, the bib forecast isn’t just about numbers—it’s about inclusivity and diversity. According to UTMB organizers:
Over 2,500 runners will take part in the full UTMB 100-mile course.
Nearly 12,000 runners are expected across all 7 races.
A new record for female participation is expected, thanks in part to the Wild Women Project and new outreach efforts.
There’s an increase in representation from countries like Brazil, South Korea, South Africa, and Vietnam.
Having witnessed last year’s start line, I’m honestly thrilled to see how much more global it’s becoming. Every runner has a different story—and UTMB brings those stories to life in the mountains.
Gear, logistics, and what goes with the bib
Getting a bib is just step one. You’ll need mandatory gear, including:
Waterproof jacket with hood (10,000 mm minimum)
Thermal base layer
Hat + gloves
Emergency blanket
Headlamp with spare batteries
Nutrition (minimum 800 kcal at all times)
Refillable water containers (1L minimum)
Mental preparation: The forgotten part of the bib
A UTMB 2025 bib is a badge of honor, yes—but it’s also a contract between you and the mountain. You owe it to yourself to be mentally ready for:
Hours (or days) alone in the dark
Unexpected weather
Blisters, cramps, and doubt
That said, there’s nothing more motivating than remembering how many people wanted that bib—and how you earned it. Last year, that thought kept me moving when my legs screamed “stop.”
Post-race & bib legacy
Once you finish, your bib becomes a symbol of triumph. I framed mine. You’ll see others at cafés in Chamonix still wearing theirs the next day—sweaty, muddy, but full of pride.
UTMB also archives all results tied to bibs online. You can revisit your time, splits, photos, and even get a finisher badge to share on social media.
Final words from the trail
Securing a UTMB 2025 bib might be one of the hardest parts of the whole experience—but it’s also the most rewarding. From the email confirming your entry to the moment you clip that bib onto your pack in Chamonix, everything becomes a part of your journey.
Whether you’re chasing a podium, a personal best, or simply the finish line, know that you’re joining a truly international family of runners who believe in dreaming big, climbing high, and running far.
