The Winter Spine Race is widely regarded as one of the toughest ultra-trail races in the world. Covering 268 miles along the Pennine Way, in the heart of a British winter, it demands total self-sufficiency, navigation skills, resilience to cold, darkness, sleep deprivation, and the ability to keep moving when conditions become truly extreme. Great trail run
From start to finish great volunteers, marshals out on course were amazing and very encouraging. Course marked out and easy to follow. Amazing route. Lots of people taking photos to show your achievement. Finish area was well organised, with shouts of praise from more amazing volunteers and a beautiful medal.

Fantastic event ran by an amazing group in a cracking place.
The medals are some of the best ones I have received from Trail Outlaws. I’m impressed with their organisation and the fact they have a medical team is amazing. Great group.

Beautiful race with a twist that will challenge you
The novelty of both racing the tide and a border crossing in once route drew me in and I found a pretty race through varied country that is harder than it looks on paper. Don’t let the numbers fool you, those big ups in the middle take some getting over! The race team are all lovely, very helpful and greet you at every aid station with big smiles and good craic. If you are looking or feeling a bit wobbly, they will do everything in their power to get you back up and on the course (including holding your muddy feet up while you’re taking a tactical lie-down and plying you with sweet hot tea). The aid stations are sensibly positioned with never too long a gap between them, although there are a couple that you wish were a mile closer! Aid stations are well provisioned with sweet offerings, often fruit, plenty of water and both regular cola and the medicinal delicacy that is ‘Red Kola’. If you crave salty snacks while running, you will need to pop some in your drop bags, although there is more variety in food at Morebattle and Wooler (both drop bag stations and both indoors). It’s very nice to have options for two drop bags plus a finish bag on a smaller event like this and it makes it very manageable to run this race as a solo effort although probably a tiny bit easier if you have a small crew with you, and again, definitely in the realms of possibility for newcomers to ultra-distance as long as you’ve done your training miles and some hill practice. All in all, I’d definitely recommend it as both a route and as a race.

...Winter can be one of the most rewarding seasons to train for trail running — but also one of the most challenging. Shorter days, freezing temperatures, snow-covered paths, slippery terrain, and a drop in motivation can make winter trail running feel intimidating. Yet, winter training builds strength, resilience, mental toughness, and technical skills that are […]

It takes place inside Peneda-Gerês National Park, a natural paradise with granite peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls and ancient shepherd trails.
